How to match your resume to a job description

  1. Paste the job description

Copy the whole posting, including responsibilities, requirements and nice-to-haves.

  2. Add your resume

Paste the text, or upload a PDF, Word or text file. It is read on your device.

  3. Fix the gaps

Read the missing keywords and the marked-up posting. Add the ones that are true for you, in the same words the job uses.

Many companies run resumes through applicant tracking systems (ATS), and recruiters search them for the words in the job post. A resume can be a strong fit and still go unseen if it describes the same skill in different words. This tool compares the two texts, scores the overlap and shows you exactly where the wording differs.

What it does

  • Finds the skills, tools, soft skills and repeated terms in the job description and checks each one against your resume, including common spellings such as JS and JavaScript, or K8s and Kubernetes.
  • Separates must-haves from nice-to-haves using the headings in the posting, so the score weighs them differently.
  • Marks up the job description so you can see every keyword and whether your resume has it.
  • Runs eight plain-text format checks: contact details, standard headings, length, bullets, numbers, action verbs, dates and writing style.
  • Reads PDF, Word (.docx) and text files on your device. Nothing is uploaded.

Limits, honestly

  • It is a keyword matcher, not a copy of any company’s ATS. Real systems differ, and no tool can predict a hiring decision.
  • The score counts matching words. A high score means your wording lines up with the job, not that you are the right candidate.
  • Only add keywords that are true. Claiming skills you do not have fails at the interview and can cost you the job.
  • It reads the text of your resume. It cannot see layout problems such as tables, columns or text inside images, so keep the design simple.
  • A scanned PDF is a picture with no text. Paste the text, or export a text-based PDF.
  • Skills outside its built-in list are picked up only when the job description repeats them.

Resume Keyword Matcher: questions and answers

How do I check my resume against a job description?

Paste the job post on the right and your resume on the left, or upload your resume. The match score, the missing keywords and the format checks appear as you type.

What is an ATS and does it reject resumes?

An applicant tracking system stores and sorts the applications a company receives. Most do not throw a resume away on a score alone, but recruiters search and rank them by keyword, so a resume that uses the job’s own words is easier to find.

What is a good match score?

Aim for roughly 65 to 80 percent and fix the must-haves first. Do not chase 100: copying every word makes a resume read badly and is no guarantee of an interview.

Should I copy keywords from the job description?

Use the same words for skills you really have, such as stakeholder management rather than managing stakeholders, in your Skills section and in the bullet that shows how you used them. Never hide keywords in white text. Systems and recruiters both flag it.

Is my resume uploaded or stored?

No. The text is read in your browser, and PDF and Word files are opened on your own device. Nothing is sent, saved or logged.

Does it work with PDF and Word resumes?

Yes, with text-based PDFs and .docx files. A scanned PDF has no text to read, and an old .doc file should be saved as .docx first. You can always paste the text.

How is this different from paid resume scanners?

It is free, needs no sign-up, has no scan limit, never uploads your resume and shows exactly which words matched. Paid tools may have larger skill libraries and job-title analysis.

Does it work for jobs outside tech?

Yes. The skill list covers project management, marketing, design, sales, finance, HR and operations as well as engineering, and it also picks up terms that the posting repeats.
